Taas häälahja - Another wedding present

So, I can finally publish these, since the wedding is over. I tatted the lace and my sister embroidered and sew the pillow cases. This was the first time we used tatted lace. I think they turned out quite well :)

Penguin Books! - suunnitelma, the plan

Lily, who writes Lily's Quilts blog, made a quilt from Penguin books. And now, I have to start quilting as well. I have thought about it before, but have always procrastinated. Now, I found something I really want to do/have. I ordered the same Kona fabric as she used, but I chose a different jelly roll: Kona® Cotton Solids, Classic Palette.

Kona Cotton Solids Classic Palette jelly roll

I already calculated a bit how big of a quilt I want and how many books I should have. The quilt will be about 2 x 2.6 m and there are 8 x 7 = 56 books. The books are 18 cm x 30 cm in size and the color blocks are 9 cm in height and the off-white middle is 12 cm. The fabric between the books is Kona Snow and the spaces are 6 cm each. Below is the layout plan. The names of the books are my favorites from the Penguin classics, or ones that have a special meaning to me, but I also have chosen some of my own favorites that are not Penguin books, for example my Finnish favorite books. More specific list of books will be provided later.

Craftsy!

Nimittäin, siellä on käpyilykurssi!

I advertized Craftsy courses already at my other blog, but I had to do it here too. They have a tatting course, you see. Surprisingly, it's under crochet courses... I haven't taken the course and I won't since I think it's more basics and I already know, but I'm taking few sewing courses and what I've seen about them I'm convinced. And I've heard a lot of good, especially about the sewing courses. You can also watch samples of the few first lessons, so you sort of get the idea what will be going on. So, if you want to learn tatting, I think this might be a good place to start. And the courses are on sale until the 2nd of July, so go sign up now!

Torstaiarvonta - Thursday giveaway

Haluaisin kuitenkin antaa niille kodin, jossa niitä arvostetaan. Siksi nyt muutaman viikon ajan arvon pois kirjoja hyllystäni. Tämän kertaisessa arvonnassa ovat englanninkieliset Stich 'n Bitch -kirjat: The Knitter's Handbook ja The Happy Hooker.

Onnea arvontaan!

I'm cleaning my bookshelf and it's time for some of my craft books to go as well. I'd like to give them a home, where they are appreciated, though. That's why, I will have giveaways for a couple of weeks now. This time the giveaway books are the Stich 'n Bitch books: The Knitter's Handbook and The Happy Hooker. There is also a small surprise with the Knitter's Handbook. You can participate by commenting this post and specifying which book you would like to get, if won. You can enter for both, but if you have a preference, please state it. It's very likely that I will just randomly choose a comment post number, but please tell me why you should get the book/books. First, I think it's more fun to read such comments and second, I might decide to send the books based on your argument. So I will reserve the right to change the rules on this account. You can participate until next Thursday (notice the time difference, although, I might take account late entries if it's still Thursday in your country. I might not be able to send the books right away, but the next week in any case. Leave also your e-mail in the comment, so that I can reach you in case you won. The giveaway is international. Also, if you are interested in craft books, check out my blog in the near future, since I'm most likely having more of these, especially if this proves to be popular.

Good luck!

Uusi tiedote - New announcement

Tässä muiden blogeja seuratessani, olen tullut siihen tulokseen, että haluan irrottaa vaatteiden ompelun kokonaisuudessaan toiseen blogiini: A Look of One's Own.

As I've read other people's blogs, I've come to the conclusion that I want to separate the sewing of clothes to my other blog: A Look of One's Own. That will be in the future, in addition to style, the basic blog for all clothes and accessories sewing. Here I will post about all other crafts and also other type of sewing (in case I ever actually make a quilt, like I've planned). The other blog is probably also more regular what comes to posting, since I have lot more ideas for it than for this one besides the actual objects I'm making (and my time limits this). In any case, I'm not discarding this blog either, I'm just moving the sewing activity, so that I don't need to make double posts and it's somehow clearer what's where.

Tunnista jalka - Spot the foot

Jotain mitä huomasin charleston-mekkoa ommellessani: en tunnista suurinta osaa ompelukoneeni jaloista. Alla olevassa kuvassa näkyvät kaikki (paitsi perusjalka), jotka tulivat koneeni mukana.

Something I realized when I sewed my charleston dress: I don't recognize most of the feet of my sewing machine. In the picture below are all (except the basic one), which came with my machine.

From these I can recognize number 6: the button hole foot and number 9: the zipper foot. Others are more or less ambiguous. If you can name any of these, I would appreciate if you could do so in the comment section.

Olen jo pitkään harkinnut neulatyynyä, jonka ajattelin ommella itse, mutta en ole saanut aikaiseksi. Niinpä ostin Etsystä, kaupasta nimeltä HappyLittleCottage. Olen erittäin tyytyväinen ostokseeni :)

I have needed a pin cushion for a long time and I thought I would make one myself, but I haven't gotten around to it. So I bought one on Etsy from a shop called HappyLittleCottage. I'm very happy with it :)

And this wasn't all! I also found an incredible fabric store: Spoonflower. You can order your custom pattern fabric there or buy someone else's design they have marked public. This helps for example, if you happen to be looking for a fabric for a dress from a certain era...

Charleston-mekko: käyttövalmis - Charleston dress: ready to use

I did finish the charleston dress in time for the speakeasy. It does need some work, but it worked for one night with the help of safety pins. The upper part doesn't sit quite right so I had to attach my bra to the dress with safety pins and because the bra was as flattening as possible, a sports bra, the safety pins were eating my flesh pretty nicely. Luckily no one else could tell. But I will try to make this a bit usable, when I figure out how. I did learn, that the 20s style isn't the most flattering to my figure, although it does look surprisingly good in this picture. And I do want to wear it all the same...

Ompelufaktoja/Sewing Facts:

Kankaat/Fabrics:
Strech satin (97% polyester, 3% elastane) 11,90 €/m, hinta/cost 20,23 €
Barbara lace (70% cotton, 30 % polyamide) 16,90 €/m, hinta/cost 8,45 €

Kaava/Pattern: Charleston puku, 20-luku, Suuri Käsityölehti 9/2009 (20s retro pattern from Finnish sewing magazine)

Vuosi/Year: 1920s/2009

Muuta/Notions:

I added the zipper (2,55 €), which wasn't included in the original pattern. As I have planned this for dancing/20s parties and I want to try to create the whole look with hair and make-up, I want to be able to get into the dress after I have done my hair & make-up. Also planned some decorating, which will be added later if I can work out the kinks with this dress.

Kesto/Time: ~13h
Tähän kuuluu uuden ompelukoneen opettelu ja muutama purkaminen.
This includes learning to use my new sewing machine and few times taking the sewing apart.

Charleston-mekko: piilovetoketju - Charleston: invisible zipper

First challenge with the dress was that I needed to start with the zipper. And it was an invisible zipper. Also, I needed to find the right foot among the other feet for the sewing machine (more about this later). I did, however find a pretty good video in youtube which helped me a whole lot.

Kuinka ommella piilovetoketju:
How to sew an invisible zipper:

Joten sitten vaan ompelemaan. Tästä aloitin:
So, then let's get started. Here's what I started with:

One might notice from the picture, that something is wrong. I had already pinned the zipper (but luckily I didn't baste it yet), when I noticed that the zipper is facing the wrong way. So, I started again.

So, this looks better! And finally the actual sewing of the zipper went fine, as you can see from the result. So I was nervous for nothing. I did decide to buy a more narrow zipper foot and an invisible zipper foot (which they used in the video), because I noticed that if the zipper is exactly the size you need, the method I used now, is a bit more complicated. This time the zipper was fairly long (50 cm), so it doesn't matter if it doesn't open all the way.

Charleston-mekon ompelu jatkuu... Ensimmäinen käyttökerta olisi tänään illalla, joten ryhdynpä työhön (olen hieman pidemmällä, kuin mitä tämä postaus antaa ymmärtää).

The sewing of the charleston dress continues... The first use would be tonight, so I think I'll start working now (I've advanced a bit further than this post lets you understand).

Pitkäaikaisprojekteja - Long term projects

Nuo pienimmät on tehty ihan ompelulangasta. No, ehkä koolla 80 tulee vielä ihan kivaa.

A long time a go I got an idea about a star blanket. I just couldn't find the right pattern for the star, since I knew what I wanted. Or at least, what I didn't want. Finally I ended up adjusting my own pattern from the existing ones. Now I have made several stars with this pattern. The smallest ones are made with sewing thread. After using sewing thread, the thicker threads seem somewhat clumsy... Well, maybe I still like threads nr 80.

Another project which I started when I moved to Helsinki, is a pelmet made from brown thread. Now it's possible that I'm moving in the fall, so it probably will be unfinished until then. Then I will know if I have a window for it. Here is a picture, however, of the unfinished object. I have adapted the pattern from couple of different sources (I can't remember from where, it was about 7 years ago...)

From top to bottom: 1. made from sewing thread 2. cross 3. gift for my godmother
My godmother turned 60 and I tatted her a bookmark. I was a bit late with the gift, but I guess it's better late than never, right? Pattern is my own adaptation (not much adapted), but based on a picture at this website (Tatted Bookmark 2). I did another one from sewing thread for a friend who got his Master's degree. I think it turned out quite well also. And for another friend a cross bookmark like the ones I've done before

Would you like a jelly baby?". Tarvinnee tehdä itselleni jotain tästä langasta myös...

I had one more friend graduating, so she also got a bookmark. This thread made me think of Doctor Who (both the gift giver and receiver are fans): "Would you like a jelly baby?" I think I might need to do something for myself from this thread as well...

Ilmoitus - Announcement

Uusi blogi on kokonaan englanninkielinen, koska on osittain raskasta kirjoittaa kaikki kahteen kertaan, vaikkakin eri kielellä.

I have lately, through sewing, gotten excited of thinking about my own style. Which proves that one can get interested in anything (I wouldn't have thought that I would be interested in style, ever). I do, however, want to keep this blog as a craft blog, so I decided to create a new one for the new purpose. The new blog will, in addition to style, have stuff about sewing, since in my world these two go hand in hand. I will comment or at least link the sewing stuff to this blog as well, so if you're not interested in my ramblings about style, you won't miss the actual sewing. The new blog is all in English, since I find it a bit hard sometimes to write in two languages, even though I have my reasons to do so in this blog (e.g. there's not that much about tatting in Finnish anywhere and I also know people who follow my blog, who couldn't do so if it was only in English). But without further ado, you can find the new blog here.

Charleston-mekko - Charleston dress

Fabrics and lace for the charleston dress

I need a charleston dress and I couldn't find a ready-made one, so I decided to sew one. I bought the fabrics needed and I have tatted some decorative lace for it (although I had to start over since I forgot that the dress will have a zipper...).

Osa mekosta on jo leikattu
Part of the dress has been cut

And when I was buying a zipper, I couldn't help myself but buy a new tape measure. It was such a lovely colour :) and it has a magnet, so I can attach it to the sewing machine's metal parts or to the fridge, so I won't lose it!

Mummon vanha ompelukone (josta voit nähdä kuvan täällä) aiheuttaa minulle vain itkua ja hammasten kiristystä, joten päädyin tilaamaan uuden :) Löysin Ompelijanmaailmasta hyvän tarjouksen Husqvarnan 140v juhlavuosimallista, jonka totesin jonkin aikaa netissä surffattuani parhaaksi hinta-laatusuhteeltaan ja joka sopii vielä omaan budjettiini. En malta odottaa, että pääsen sitä kokeilemaan!

My grandmother's old sewing machine (you can see the picture here) has caused me a lot of gray hairs, so I decided to order a new one :) I found a good deal at Ompelijanmaailma: Husqvarna's new 140 years celebration model, which I decided had the best price-quality ratio in my budget range. I can't wait to try it out!

Working on practice lace (or my friend showing how it's done)
I got an old bobbin lace pillow from my aunt, since I've wanted to try it for a long time. At last, last summer I found someone who helped me to get started. I even managed to do some nice lace. I did get instructions on how to finish it, so I could remove the lace from the pillow, but since I didn't do it right a way, it's still attached. Maybe next summer.

Farkkutakki - Jeans jacket

This project has been unfinished for a long time and I decided it would be ready for this summer. The jeans jacket sleaves have started to look really bad and I didn't really want to wear it anymore. On the other hand, it fits well and it even has the cat I (or really: my mum) had put there. I had the same problem with my favorite sweater. It's 15 years old and I've worn it a lot and it shows, but the sleaves are still good. So the plan is to take the sleaves from the sweater and attach them to the jacket. To be continued.

Kirjanmerkkejä ja muuta viime vuodelta - Bookmarks and stuff from last year

Last year I didn't update the blog much, but did some work still. Here are some tatted stuff. The bookmarks were given as presents and the others I'm still not found the use for.

Vauvan lapaset - Baby mittens

Kavereille syntyi lapsi. Tämän johdosta innostuin taas kutomaan ja saamaan jotain valmiiksi. Malli löytyi äidin norjankielisestä lehdestä (unohdin kirjoittaa ylös tarkemmat tiedot), äiti oli tehnyt samalla mallilla tumput siskontytölle.

My friends had a baby. Because of this I started knitting again and even finished something! Pattern is from my mum's Norwegian knitting magazine (I forgot to write down the specific information). Mum had made a pair for my brand new niece with the same pattern.

Muutamia asioita olen aloittanut ja melkein saanut valmiiksikin viime vuoden aikana, vaikka blogin päivitys on ollut ylivoimaista. Korjaan asian piakkoin ja raportoin viime vuoden aikaansaannoksista. Eipä tainnut siitä säännöllisestä päivittämisestä mitään tulla... Voihan sitä toisaalta aina kokeilla uudelleen.

I have started few things during last year and almost finished something, even though I haven't really updated my blog. I will correct this and report soon about the last year's accomplishments. I obviously couldn't keep up with the regular updates... But I guess I can always try again.

So, you can see the mittens in the picture (*states the obvious*). One is of the back side and the other of the palm side. The yarn used is lanett (wonderfully soft) and I used 2.5 needles. It was so nice not having to worry about the thumb :) I made the wrist part a bit longer, because based on the experience of my sister, the mittens stay put better if that part is longer.
