Uusi tiedote - New announcement

Tässä muiden blogeja seuratessani, olen tullut siihen tulokseen, että haluan irrottaa vaatteiden ompelun kokonaisuudessaan toiseen blogiini: A Look of One's Own.

As I've read other people's blogs, I've come to the conclusion that I want to separate the sewing of clothes to my other blog: A Look of One's Own. That will be in the future, in addition to style, the basic blog for all clothes and accessories sewing. Here I will post about all other crafts and also other type of sewing (in case I ever actually make a quilt, like I've planned). The other blog is probably also more regular what comes to posting, since I have lot more ideas for it than for this one besides the actual objects I'm making (and my time limits this). In any case, I'm not discarding this blog either, I'm just moving the sewing activity, so that I don't need to make double posts and it's somehow clearer what's where.

Tunnista jalka - Spot the foot

Jotain mitä huomasin charleston-mekkoa ommellessani: en tunnista suurinta osaa ompelukoneeni jaloista. Alla olevassa kuvassa näkyvät kaikki (paitsi perusjalka), jotka tulivat koneeni mukana.

Something I realized when I sewed my charleston dress: I don't recognize most of the feet of my sewing machine. In the picture below are all (except the basic one), which came with my machine.

From these I can recognize number 6: the button hole foot and number 9: the zipper foot. Others are more or less ambiguous. If you can name any of these, I would appreciate if you could do so in the comment section.

Olen jo pitkään harkinnut neulatyynyä, jonka ajattelin ommella itse, mutta en ole saanut aikaiseksi. Niinpä ostin Etsystä, kaupasta nimeltä HappyLittleCottage. Olen erittäin tyytyväinen ostokseeni :)

I have needed a pin cushion for a long time and I thought I would make one myself, but I haven't gotten around to it. So I bought one on Etsy from a shop called HappyLittleCottage. I'm very happy with it :)

And this wasn't all! I also found an incredible fabric store: Spoonflower. You can order your custom pattern fabric there or buy someone else's design they have marked public. This helps for example, if you happen to be looking for a fabric for a dress from a certain era...

Charleston-mekko: käyttövalmis - Charleston dress: ready to use

I did finish the charleston dress in time for the speakeasy. It does need some work, but it worked for one night with the help of safety pins. The upper part doesn't sit quite right so I had to attach my bra to the dress with safety pins and because the bra was as flattening as possible, a sports bra, the safety pins were eating my flesh pretty nicely. Luckily no one else could tell. But I will try to make this a bit usable, when I figure out how. I did learn, that the 20s style isn't the most flattering to my figure, although it does look surprisingly good in this picture. And I do want to wear it all the same...

Ompelufaktoja/Sewing Facts:

Kankaat/Fabrics:
Strech satin (97% polyester, 3% elastane) 11,90 €/m, hinta/cost 20,23 €
Barbara lace (70% cotton, 30 % polyamide) 16,90 €/m, hinta/cost 8,45 €

Kaava/Pattern: Charleston puku, 20-luku, Suuri Käsityölehti 9/2009 (20s retro pattern from Finnish sewing magazine)

Vuosi/Year: 1920s/2009

Muuta/Notions:

I added the zipper (2,55 €), which wasn't included in the original pattern. As I have planned this for dancing/20s parties and I want to try to create the whole look with hair and make-up, I want to be able to get into the dress after I have done my hair & make-up. Also planned some decorating, which will be added later if I can work out the kinks with this dress.

Kesto/Time: ~13h
Tähän kuuluu uuden ompelukoneen opettelu ja muutama purkaminen.
This includes learning to use my new sewing machine and few times taking the sewing apart.

Ensimmäisen kerran käytetty/First worn: Salakapakka (bileet 12.5.)/Speakeasy (party on 12th May)

Käyttö uudelleen?/Wear again?: Kyllä, jos saan mekon fiksattua mieleisekseni./ Yes, if I can fix it to my liking

Koko hinta/Total price: ~35 €

Charleston-mekko: piilovetoketju - Charleston: invisible zipper

First challenge with the dress was that I needed to start with the zipper. And it was an invisible zipper. Also, I needed to find the right foot among the other feet for the sewing machine (more about this later). I did, however find a pretty good video in youtube which helped me a whole lot.

Kuinka ommella piilovetoketju:
How to sew an invisible zipper:

Joten sitten vaan ompelemaan. Tästä aloitin:
So, then let's get started. Here's what I started with:

One might notice from the picture, that something is wrong. I had already pinned the zipper (but luckily I didn't baste it yet), when I noticed that the zipper is facing the wrong way. So, I started again.

So, this looks better! And finally the actual sewing of the zipper went fine, as you can see from the result. So I was nervous for nothing. I did decide to buy a more narrow zipper foot and an invisible zipper foot (which they used in the video), because I noticed that if the zipper is exactly the size you need, the method I used now, is a bit more complicated. This time the zipper was fairly long (50 cm), so it doesn't matter if it doesn't open all the way.

Charleston-mekon ompelu jatkuu... Ensimmäinen käyttökerta olisi tänään illalla, joten ryhdynpä työhön (olen hieman pidemmällä, kuin mitä tämä postaus antaa ymmärtää).

The sewing of the charleston dress continues... The first use would be tonight, so I think I'll start working now (I've advanced a bit further than this post lets you understand).

Pitkäaikaisprojekteja - Long term projects

Nuo pienimmät on tehty ihan ompelulangasta. No, ehkä koolla 80 tulee vielä ihan kivaa.

A long time a go I got an idea about a star blanket. I just couldn't find the right pattern for the star, since I knew what I wanted. Or at least, what I didn't want. Finally I ended up adjusting my own pattern from the existing ones. Now I have made several stars with this pattern. The smallest ones are made with sewing thread. After using sewing thread, the thicker threads seem somewhat clumsy... Well, maybe I still like threads nr 80.

Another project which I started when I moved to Helsinki, is a pelmet made from brown thread. Now it's possible that I'm moving in the fall, so it probably will be unfinished until then. Then I will know if I have a window for it. Here is a picture, however, of the unfinished object. I have adapted the pattern from couple of different sources (I can't remember from where, it was about 7 years ago...)

From top to bottom: 1. made from sewing thread 2. cross 3. gift for my godmother
My godmother turned 60 and I tatted her a bookmark. I was a bit late with the gift, but I guess it's better late than never, right? Pattern is my own adaptation (not much adapted), but based on a picture at this website (Tatted Bookmark 2). I did another one from sewing thread for a friend who got his Master's degree. I think it turned out quite well also. And for another friend a cross bookmark like the ones I've done before

Would you like a jelly baby?". Tarvinnee tehdä itselleni jotain tästä langasta myös...

I had one more friend graduating, so she also got a bookmark. This thread made me think of Doctor Who (both the gift giver and receiver are fans): "Would you like a jelly baby?" I think I might need to do something for myself from this thread as well...
