Penguin Books! - suunnitelma, the plan

Lily, joka kirjoittaa Lily's Quilts -blogia, teki tilkkutäkin Penguin-kirjoista. Ja nyt on pakko minunkin ruveta tilkkuilijaksi. Olen harkinnut tätä joskus aiemminkin, mutta en ole koskaan saanut aikaiseksi aloittaa. Nyt löysin peiton, jonka haluan ehdottomasti tehdä. Tilasin samaa Kona-kangasta, kuin mitä Lily käytti, mutta valitsin eri rullan: Kona® Cotton Solids, Classic Palette.

Lily, who writes Lily's Quilts blog, made a quilt from Penguin books. And now, I have to start quilting as well. I have thought about it before, but have always procrastinated. Now, I found something I really want to do/have. I ordered the same Kona fabric as she used, but I chose a different jelly roll: Kona® Cotton Solids, Classic Palette.

Hieman jo laskeskelin, minkä kokoinen peiton pitäisi olla ja kuinka monta kirjaa minun pitäisi tehdä. Peiton koko tulee olemaan n. 2 x 2,6 m ja kirjoja tulee 8 x 7 kpl = 56 kpl. Kirjojen koko on 18 cm x 30 cm ja väripalkkien korkeus on 9 cm ja vaalean keskiosan 12 cm. Väleihin käytän Kona Snow -kangasta ja välit ovat kooltaan 6 cm. Alla asettelusuunnitelma. Kirjojen nimiksi olen valinnut oikeita Penguin classics -kirjoja, jotka ovat suosikkejani tai muuten merkityksellisiä minulle, sekä omia suosikkejani, jotka eivät ole Penguin -kirjoja, esim. suomalaisia suosikkejani. Tarkempi kirjalista tulee ehkä sitten myöhemmin.

I already calculated a bit how big of a quilt I want and how many books I should have. The quilt will be about 2 x 2.6 m and there are 8 x 7 = 56 books. The books are 18 cm x 30 cm in size and the color blocks are 9 cm in height and the off-white middle is 12 cm. The fabric between the books is Kona Snow and the spaces are 6 cm each. Below is the layout plan. The names of the books are my favorites from the Penguin classics, or ones that have a special meaning to me, but I also have chosen some of my own favorites that are not Penguin books, for example my Finnish favorite books. More specific list of books will be provided later.

Uusi tiedote - New announcement

Tässä muiden blogeja seuratessani, olen tullut siihen tulokseen, että haluan irrottaa vaatteiden ompelun kokonaisuudessaan toiseen blogiini: A Look of One's Own. Se toimii jatkossa siis tyylin lisäksi kaikessa vaate- ja asusteompeluun liittyvässä perusblogina. Täällä pysyy kaikki muut käsityöt ja muu ompelu (jos esim. saan koskaan tilkkupeittoa tehtyä niin kuin olen suunnitellut). Tuo toinen blogi myös päivittynee vähän säännöllisemmin kuin tämä, kun tyyliin ja ompeluun liittyen on enemmän ideoita kuin tämän blogin aiheisiin, paitsi tekemäni käsityöt (ja tässä on pieni aikarajoite). Joka tapauksessa tätäkään blogia ei hylätä, mutta ompeluaktiivisuus siirtyy niin ei tarvitse sitten tuplasti kirjoittaa ja jako on jotenkin selkeämpi.

As I've read other people's blogs, I've come to the conclusion that I want to separate the sewing of clothes to my other blog: A Look of One's Own. That will be in the future, in addition to style, the basic blog for all clothes and accessories sewing. Here I will post about all other crafts and also other type of sewing (in case I ever actually make a quilt, like I've planned). The other blog is probably also more regular what comes to posting, since I have lot more ideas for it than for this one besides the actual objects I'm making (and my time limits this). In any case, I'm not discarding this blog either, I'm just moving the sewing activity, so that I don't need to make double posts and it's somehow clearer what's where.

Tunnista jalka - Spot the foot

Jotain mitä huomasin charleston-mekkoa ommellessani: en tunnista suurinta osaa ompelukoneeni jaloista. Alla olevassa kuvassa näkyvät kaikki (paitsi perusjalka), jotka tulivat koneeni mukana.

Something I realized when I sewed my charleston dress: I don't recognize most of the feet of my sewing machine. In the picture below are all (except the basic one), which came with my machine.


Tunnistan näistä numeron 6: napinläpijalka ja numeron 9: vetoketjujalka. Muut ovat sitten enemmän tai vähemmän hämärän peitossa. Jos osaat nimetä jonkun, niin olisin kiitollinen jos tekisit niin kommenttiosiossa.

From these I can recognize number 6: the button hole foot and number 9: the zipper foot. Others are more or less ambiguous. If you can name any of these, I would appreciate if you could do so in the comment section.

Olen jo pitkään harkinnut neulatyynyä, jonka ajattelin ommella itse, mutta en ole saanut aikaiseksi. Niinpä ostin Etsystä, kaupasta nimeltä HappyLittleCottage. Olen erittäin tyytyväinen ostokseeni :)

I have needed a pin cushion for a long time and I thought I would make one myself, but I haven't gotten around to it. So I bought one on Etsy from a shop called HappyLittleCottage. I'm very happy with it :)


Eikä tässä vielä kaikki! Löysin myös aivan mahtavan kangas kaupan: Spoonflower. Siellä voi tilata kankaan oman suunnitelmansa mukaan tai ostaa muiden julkiseksi merkitsemiä malleja. Tämä auttaa, jos esim. etsii tietynlaista kangasta tietyn aikakauden mekkoon...

And this wasn't all! I also found an incredible fabric store: Spoonflower. You can order your custom pattern fabric there or buy someone else's design they have marked public. This helps for example, if you happen to be looking for a fabric for a dress from a certain era...

Charleston-mekko: käyttövalmis - Charleston dress: ready to use

Ehdinpäs saada charleston-mekon käyttöön salakapakkaa varten. Kyllä se vielä kaipaa työtä, mutta hieman hakaneuloja avuksi käyttämällä meni tämä ilta. Koska yläosa ei aivan istunut, niin jouduin kiinnittämään rintaliivit pukuun hakaneuloilla ja koska kyseessä olivat mahdollisimman litistävät liivit, urheiluliivit, pureutuivat hakaneulat olkapäihin aika mukavasti. Mutta ulospäin sitä ei huomaa. Mutta yritän tehdä tästä vielä käyttökelpoisemman, kun keksin miten. Sen kyllä huomasin, että 20-luvun tyyli ei ehkä ole minun vartalolleni se kaikkein imartelevin, vaikka tässä kuvassa se kyllä näyttää yllättävän hyvältä. Ja haluan siihen pukeutua kaikesta huolimatta...

I did finish the charleston dress in time for the speakeasy. It does need some work, but it worked for one night with the help of safety pins. The upper part doesn't sit quite right so I had to attach my bra to the dress with safety pins and because the bra was as flattening as possible, a sports bra, the safety pins were eating my flesh pretty nicely. Luckily no one else could tell. But I will try to make this a bit usable, when I figure out how. I did learn, that the 20s style isn't the most flattering to my figure, although it does look surprisingly good in this picture. And I do want to wear it all the same...

Lisäsin vetoketjun (2,55 €), jota ei ollut alkuperäisessä kaavassa. Koska suunnittelin tätä käytettäväksi tanssiessa/20-luvun bileissä ja haluan yrittää saada aikaan koko tyylin hiustyyleineen ja meikkeineen (vielä työn alla), halusin, että voin pukea mekon hiusten laitoin ja meikkauksen jälkeen. Suunnittelin lisääväni tähän myös käpypitsiä, jonka lisään myöhemmin, jos saan puvun korjattua mieleisekseni.

I added the zipper (2,55 €), which wasn't included in the original pattern. As I have planned this for dancing/20s parties and I want to try to create the whole look with hair and make-up, I want to be able to get into the dress after I have done my hair & make-up. Also planned some decorating, which will be added later if I can work out the kinks with this dress.

Mekossa ensimmäinen haaste tuli siitä, että se piti aloittaa vetketjusta, joka kaiken lisäksi oli piilovetoketju. Piti myös löytää vetoketjujalka muiden joukosta (lisää tästä myöhemmin). Löysin youtubesta hyvän ohjeen ja olo helpottui jo huomattavasti.

First challenge with the dress was that I needed to start with the zipper. And it was an invisible zipper. Also, I needed to find the right foot among the other feet for the sewing machine (more about this later). I did, however find a pretty good video in youtube which helped me a whole lot.

Joten sitten vaan ompelemaan. Tästä aloitin:
So, then let's get started. Here's what I started with:

Ehkä kuvasta huomaakin, että jotain on pielessä. Ehdin jo laittaa nuppineuloilla kiinni (mutta onneksi en vielä harsia), kunnes huomasin, että vetoketjuhan on väärin päin. Aloitin siis alusta.

One might notice from the picture, that something is wrong. I had already pinned the zipper (but luckily I didn't baste it yet), when I noticed that the zipper is facing the wrong way. So, I started again.

No niin, nyt näyttää paremmalta! Ja lopulta vetoketjun ompeleminen sujuikin ihan mallikkaasti, kuten lopputuloksesta voi huomata. Eli turhaan hermoilin vetoketjun kanssa. Ajattelin kyllä ostaa hieman kapeamman vetoketjujalan ja piilovetoketjujalan (jota käytettiin videossa), koska huomasin, että jos vetoketju on juuri ja juuri oikean kokoinen, niin nykymenetelmäni on hieman vaikea. Tässä oli reilunpituinen vetoketju (50 cm), joten ei haitannut, vaikka se ei aukeaisi ihan loppuun asti.

So, this looks better! And finally the actual sewing of the zipper went fine, as you can see from the result. So I was nervous for nothing. I did decide to buy a more narrow zipper foot and an invisible zipper foot (which they used in the video), because I noticed that if the zipper is exactly the size you need, the method I used now, is a bit more complicated. This time the zipper was fairly long (50 cm), so it doesn't matter if it doesn't open all the way.

Ilmoitus - Announcement

Olen viime viikkoina innostunut ompelun kautta myös oman tyylin pohtimisesta. Joka todistaa ainakin sen, että ihan mistä vaan voi kiinnostua (en olisi itsestäni ikinä uskonut). Haluan kuitenkin pitää tämän blogin vain käsityöblogina, joten päätin perustaa uuden tyyliasioita varten. Tyyliasioiden lisäksi blogi sisältää tulevaisuudessa jonkin verran juttua myös (vaatteiden) ompelusta, koska se ja tyyli kulkevat minun maailmassani käsi kädessä. Aion silti kommentoida ompelutöitäni myös tässä blogissa tai ainakin tarvittaessa linkittää, niin että jos ei tyyliasiat kiinnosta, niin ompeluasioista ei jää paitsi. Uusi blogi on kokonaan englanninkielinen, koska on osittain raskasta kirjoittaa kaikki kahteen kertaan, vaikkakin eri kielellä. Tässä blogissa olen kuitenkin tietyistä syistä halunnut säilyttää myös suomen kielen (esim. koska käpyilystä ei ole hirveästi asiaa suomeksi missään ja lisäksi tiedän, että blogia seuraa myös ihmiset, joille englannin lukeminen olisi vaikeaa).  Mutta sen suuremmitta seremonioitta, uusi blogi löytyy täältä.

I have lately, through sewing, gotten excited of thinking about my own style. Which proves that one can get interested in anything (I wouldn't have thought that I would be interested in style, ever). I do, however, want to keep this blog as a craft blog, so I decided to create a new one for the new purpose. The new blog will, in addition to style, have stuff about sewing, since in my world these two go hand in hand. I will comment or at least link the sewing stuff to this blog as well, so if you're not interested in my ramblings about style, you won't miss the actual sewing. The new blog is all in English, since I find it a bit hard sometimes to write in two languages, even though I have my reasons to do so in this blog (e.g. there's not that much about tatting in Finnish anywhere and I also know people who follow my blog, who couldn't do so if it was only in English). But without further ado, you can find the new blog here.

Charleston-mekko - Charleston dress

Tarvitsen charleston-mekon, enkä löytänyt mieleistäni valmiina, joten päätin, että ompelen sellaisen. Ostin kankaat ja olen käpyillyt koristepitsiäkin valmiiksi (tosin joudun tekemään uutta, kun unohdin, että taakse tulee vetoketju...).

I need a charleston dress and I couldn't find a ready-made one, so I decided to sew one. I bought the fabrics needed and I have tatted some decorative lace for it (although I had to start over since I forgot that the dress will have a zipper...).

Ja kun olin vetoketjuostoksilla, sorruin ostamaan myös uuden mittanauhan. Olin niin kivan värinen :) ja siinä on vielä magneetti, niin voi kiinnittää vaikka ompelukoneen metalliosiin tai jääkaapin oveen, niin ei huku!

And when I was buying a zipper, I couldn't help myself but buy a new tape measure. It was such a lovely colour :) and it has a magnet, so I can attach it to the sewing machine's metal parts or to the fridge, so I won't lose it!



Mummon vanha ompelukone (josta voit nähdä kuvan täällä) aiheuttaa minulle vain itkua ja hammasten kiristystä, joten päädyin tilaamaan uuden :) Löysin Ompelijanmaailmasta hyvän tarjouksen Husqvarnan 140v juhlavuosimallista, jonka totesin jonkin aikaa netissä surffattuani parhaaksi hinta-laatusuhteeltaan ja joka sopii vielä omaan budjettiini. En malta odottaa, että pääsen sitä kokeilemaan!

My grandmother's old sewing machine (you can see the picture here) has caused me a lot of gray hairs, so I decided to order a new one :) I found a good deal at Ompelijanmaailma: Husqvarna's new 140 years celebration model, which I decided had the best price-quality ratio in my budget range. I can't wait to try it out!

Farkkutakki - Jeans jacket

Tämä projekti on ollut kesken jo kauan ja ajattelin, että täksi kesäksi valmistuu. Farkkutakin hihat ovat menneet niin huonoiksi, etten ole enää takkia käyttänyt. Toisaalta takki istui hyvin ja sellaisia on välillä vaikea löytää ja olin (tai äiti oli) tuon kissakin siihen laittanut. Sama ongelma on suosikkivillapaitani kanssa. Vaate on 15 vuotta vanha ja hieman kulahtanut runsaassa käytössä, mutta hihat ovat vielä aivan kunnossa. Joten suunnitelmana on leikata takista pois hihat ja korvata ne villapaidan hihoilla. Jatkoa seuraa lähiviikkoina.



This project has been unfinished for a long time and I decided it would be ready for this summer. The jeans jacket sleaves have started to look really bad and I didn't really want to wear it anymore. On the other hand, it fits well and it even has the cat I (or really: my mum) had put there. I had the same problem with my favorite sweater. It's 15 years old and I've worn it a lot and it shows, but the sleaves are still good. So the plan is to take the sleaves from the sweater and attach them to the jacket. To be continued.

Ompeluprojekti - Sewing project

Olen päättänyt opetella ompelemaan. Mutta kun aikaa on vähän, olen todennut, että täytyy tehdä aina vaan vähän kerrallaan. Ensimmäinen ongelma on ompelukone, joka on mummon perintöä ja kovin erilainen kun äidin Husqvarna (joka on samanlainen kuin mitä meillä oli koulussa). Tällä koneella siis äiti on ommellut ennen kuin muutti pois kotoa, joten kone on ainakin 60-luvun alusta. Mutta huollettu ja toimiva. Ja jos olen jotain oppinut, niin äiti = ompelukone help desk. Tässä kuva koneesta.

I have decided to learn to sew. But since I have limited time, I've realized that I have to do things small part at a time. The first problem is the sewing machine, which I inherited from my grandmother and is very different than my mum's Husqvarna (which is like the ones we used in school). With this machine my mum sewed when she was still living at home, so the machine is at least from the beginning of 60's. But serviced and functioning. And if I've learned that mom = sewing machine help desk. Here is a picture of my machine.

Muutamakin projekti olisi tuloillaan, mutta päätin aloittaa pyjamasta. Siinä on se hyvä puoli, että jos se ei ole ihan täydellinen, niin eipä sitä juuri kukaan näe... Oheisen mallin löysin Suuresta Käsityö -lehdestä 2/1995.

Few projects are already under the planning stage, but I decided to start from a pajama. The good thing about it is, that if it doesn't really work out, practically no one will see it... I found the model from a Finnish craft magazine from 1995.

Eli palat on leikattu ja muotolaskokset ommeltu. Välissä oli puolausongelmia ja jouduin soittamaan äidille, kun en ymmärtänyt ompelukoneen ohjeen kuvaa... Ja ehdin jo melkein lyödä konetta, mutta onneksi kuitenkin soitin äidille...

So the pieces are cut and I've sewn the darts. I had some problems with winding and had to call mum, since I didn't understand the picture in the sewing machine instructions... I almost hit the machine, but fortunately called mum...

Toivottavasti edes yläosa valmistuu tämän vuoden puolella...

I hope the top at least will be ready by the end of this year...

Vanhoja kaavoja - Vintage patterns

Ostin netistä vanhoja kaavoja, kun sattuivat miellyttämään silmää. Hieman oli hankala löytää sivustoa, joka toimittaisi muuallekin kuin jenkkeihin, mutta sellainen oli Momspatterns. Täytyy ottaa oikeasti ompeluprojekti työn alle. Nämä ainakin innostavat ompelemaan :)

I bought vintage patterns from the net since they happened to please my eye. Had a bit of a problem finding a site that would deliver outside US, but one was Momspatterns. I have to really undertake my sewing project. These at least make me want to sew :)


Suhteellisen onnistunut - Relatively successful

Ompelin topin äidin avustuksella vanhasta trikoosta, jota löytyi kaapista. Ihan ensin leikkasin etukappaleen väärään suuntaan, ja jouduin tekemään sauman keskelle. Päätin sitten laittaa valkoisen raidan. Osat jäi lopulta hieman pieniksi, joten lisäsin valkoiset raidat myös sivulle (ei näy kovin hyvin tuosta kuvasta). Ihan käytettävän näköinen tästä tuli, trikoo olisi voinut toki olla vähän parempilaatuista. Olen itse asiassa jo kokeillutkin käytössä. Jatkossa taidan kyllä käyttää kaavoja, enkä tehdä suurella itseluottamuksella: piirränpä tästä vanhasta hyvästä topista kaavat sanomalehteä kaavapaperina käyttäen... Tämän huomioon ottaen vaate on suorastaan loistava :)

I sewed this top with some help from my mom. It's made of a fabric that was found from the cupboards at my parent's place. Firstly, I cut the front the wrong way, so I had to make a seam in the middle. I decided to add the white stripe for some dramatic effect. The parts were little small in the end, so I also added some white to the sides (not shown very clearly in the picture). But I think it looks usable and I actually have used it already. In the future I will be using patterns, though, and not do it with a lot of self-confidence: I will just draw the patterns from this good old top using the newspaper as pattern paper... Considering this, the top is awesome :)

Tuunausta

Tässä ensimmäinen korjattu vanha vaate. Hame oli alunperin alaspäin kapeneva ja tuli puoleen sääreen asti. Lisäksi olen laihtunut hameen ostoajoista, joten se olisi voinut näyttää päälläni paremmaltakin. Lyhensin hameen juuri polven yläpuolelle ja lisäsin siihen punapohjaisesta kankaasta kiilat kävelyä ja erityisesti pyöräilyä helpottamaan. Ei mikään mestariteos, mutta onneksi suurimmat mokat jäi nurjalle puolelle. Eli kyllä ajattelin hametta käyttää.

Ompelua

Olen päättänyt ruveta tekemään vaatteita itse ja fiksaamaan vanhoja. Yksi hame on jo aluillaan ja tänään ostin kaksi tuunauskirjaa. Nyt pitää vielä saada asioita aikaiseksi. Tämä blogikin on elänyt hiljaiseloa, kun en mitään ole saanut valmiiksi, eli ei ole ollut suurempia käsityöuutisia. Ehkä ensi viikonloppuna lisää.
